Hoi An markets
April 25th 2008 02:22
Want an early morning treat? Visit the Hoi An markets around 6 - 7am. The men are out fishing from 4am and meet the women near the markets to deliver their catch. It is the women who manage the transactions inside the cramped, smelly markets. It is a feast for the senses and you really don't know where to look.
Whilst I'm sure there is some underlying order around the placement of each stall and basket to a traveller it looks like chaos. There are baskets of fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh eggs, live animals and plenty of seafood. At every turn is another aisle full of fresh herbs - the variety of smells is captivating - fresh corriander, pippies and pineapples.
Everything can be bargained for. This is where I step up and become the master negotiator - nothing is ever bought for the first price given and the simple act of throwing your hands up and walking away can deliver exceptional results. Eager sellers will chase you down to sell you their produce.
The flurry of activity, sounds of yelling, the surprising arrival of motorbikes that pass millimetres away from baskets of lettuce with not a flinch from the owners, the determined pushing along the narrow passages and the hilarious attempt of upselling tried on unsuspecting tourists. It is a fascinating venue and well worth a morning visit.

I was never up that early when I was in Hoi An, but I did see less abundant displays of food when I went out late morning. I usually went for the meals made in a restraunt, like cao lau and the 'white rose' prawn dumplings - so delicious! I liked Hoi An so much that I stayed for many weeks...
