LIVING OVERSEAS from my eyes.. IRELAND AND DUBLIN ON A WHOLE

IRELAND AND DUBLIN ON A WHOLE

From the day I set foot on Ireland, I have made it known to everyone the country of Ireland is the most beautiful piece of land on this planet, and also the people of Ireland are the most friendliest and hospitable people I have ever met. The Irish will welcome you into their homes with welcome hearts. Mind you, their directions might be a little off that I have learnt, but atleast they were helpful, not like some countries out there.

The most beautiful part of Ireland would have to go to Killarney, which is a small town on the west of Ireland, on your must visit to Killarney you need to hire a bicycle and go for a ride through the country side, the ride we took, took us on a long ride up and down through the country side, I was stiff at the end, but was worth it. The stiffness goes away later in the evening having a Guiness and listening to traditional Irish Music.

A little bit further up north is the Cliff Of Moher’s which is also a remarkable place. When visiting the cliff, get on your knees around four metres from the edge and crawl to the edge and lie flat on your stomach looking down the cliff. A lot of people each year do get blown of the cliff. You also need to take a full day tour through Wicklow, which is just south of Dublin, which has beautiful countryside, and has also been in many films.

If you are like me, and hesitate in going to places which are surrounded by violence, the best thing is to go with a recognized tour, luckily for me, my trip to Northern Ireland was with Stray tours, which we only stayed a day, that we quickly visited Derry (that is known to the Republic of Ireland) or Londonderry (that is known to Northern Ireland). I found my visit to Derry very interesting, got more of a insight into Bloody Sunday. I will say I was a bit worried when I was there, but when you are in the presence of many cameras that can also hear your conversations as well as watch you, you do make sure you don’t do anything out of line.

I managed to see most of the country of Ireland through the hop on hop off tour Stray Tours operated. The mini bus tours are the best way to see Ireland, as the big coaches do not leave the main roads. Another good mini bus tour company is Paddywagon tours.

Some of the places to visit in Dublin are Kilmainhaim Gaol, which is a must, situated on the south side of Dublin and is in walking distance from Houston station. The Gaol will give you an insight into the history of Ireland especially the Easter uprising of 1917, and is well worth its entrance fee. Dublin zoo, which is situated on the north side, isn’t a must, but is beautiful too walk through.

If you’re only in Dublin for a few days, you can see most of the sights from the Dublin city bus tour, but I hope for your sake you stay minimum a week in Dublin. The bus tour will also take you to St James Gate Brewery where you can see how Guiness is made and also try a Guiness in their bar which is also a great lookout over Dublin. If you only ever do one brewery tour this is the one to do.

Beaches in Dublin are very hard to come by, if you ever want to put the dull weather behind you and go to the beach, hop on the Dart which is their local train system and head down to Bray, it’s a beautiful seaside town around fifty or so minutes south of Dublin city. Down at Bray you can walk up to the lookout, walk along the beach, have fish n chips the Irish way. Half or full day in Bray is quite relaxing and can be what you need.

In the center of town you will come across a miniature Central Park, which the Irish call St Stephens Green which has a man made lake and heaps of grass area to have a lunch or even a siesta.

If you are bit off a sports buff like me, hop on the dart, go a few stops to Lansdowne Road. Right behind or next to the station you will see the home of Rugby Union in Ireland, and the sought of home of their football (soccer) team as well.
