LIVING IN IRELAND
Settling in
From the first day I landed in Dublin way back in September 2000 until the present day, I must say the people of Ireland are the most friendliest and the most hospitable people I have ever met. The only thing I regret from my stay or arrival in Ireland is I didn’t get to watch much of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, that’s not to say we didn’t have a television or cable because we did, it was because the television was connected up wrongly.
On arrival in Dublin we were greeted at the airport by Eurostaff and taken to the Brewery hostel in Thomas street for our first night living in a new city. That afternoon we had our Dublin induction, set up our social security numbers/ AIB bank accounts and received our speakeasy Motorola mobile phones. The rest of the day was ours to roam, explore and get a customed to our new home. Most people opted to see how they were going to get to work, I didn’t, I had a nap and went for a short walk.
That night while every one called it a early night after having one or two in the bar, another guy Brett and myself went out to meet the locals which ended up being a pub crawl trying to find the temple bar, we found the temple bar with out knowing.
The next day was a free day to us to do what we want and to establish ourselves into our new house besides the ones who were moving into a shared house at 39 Camden Street, it wasn’t much longer until we found out that thirteen of us were moving into that house. That house was not ready for us so we had to stay another night at the Brewery Hostel, so we were starting work the next day and we weren’t even settled into our house. That night we still drank but didn’t have a extra late night.
The next morning we had to check out of the hostel put our bags into storage which later was delivered to our new house which we hadn’t yet seen, and then it was off to work for the first time in Ireland. Brett, Brooke, Jodie and I had gotten a lift to work to be introduced to our new boss. Jodie and I were due to start work at The Dropping Well, Jodie didn’t get the chance to start she had a fallen out with the boss, I was able to last ¾ of my shift, I was so wrecked due to jet lag. While working my shift at The Dropping Well I could hear the staff talk about me behind my back and sought off knew I wasn’t going to get along with them so I actually asked if I could leave earlier.
I didn’t actually know how to get to where I was staying so I taxied it. I didn’t have to know the directions on how to get back there because later on I rang up Chris at Eurostaff and said I wasn’t returning.
Shortly after I arrived at 39 Camden Street, a three storey house above Jack Carvill’s off-licence. There was already two girls in the house Brooke and Bianca who chose the room at the top of the stairs on the second level, I was still a little jet lagged so I just grabbed my gear and chose to room above the lounge on second level. My roommates ended up being Brett, Shane and Diego. Jodie and Prue were in the room next to us. Mark was in the single room in the pent house and Megan, Blake and Lisa were in the room next to Mark.
Brooke later moved out, and Prue moved into the room with Bianca, and Jodie had the room by herself. Then Mark left and went back to London, Diego took his room. Then Brett moved out and lived with his girlfriend Michelle and later got engaged then married. Then followed by Lisa moving out with a friend, Prue and Jodie leaving to go back home. Two new Girls Phoebe and Kate moved into Jodie’s old room, and then shortly after Kate moving into the room with Bianca, as she couldn’t no longer room with Phoebe.
The house was magic each room was so huge, the lounge room was still able to be cut into two and still be big to make room for a make shift laundry to dry our clothes, we also had a dining room, a huge kitchen with a laundry that was used as a eating room, had so much bench space. I give a quick thank you to Lisa who cleaned out the fridges which were discussing. There was a room of the kitchen that had a spare toilet that didn’t work and another room which was I don’t know. Upstairs on the second floor we had the toilet and the bathroom, separate rooms, with carpet in each. The shower had running hot water which was cold. Sorry, the first person who jumped into it had around a minute of hot water. We later got an electric shower hose fitted in the bathtub. Don’t worry we never actually clashed in having a shower, but we did clash, but I think it was the alcohol talking. All of us were great friends and got along great.
I can remember one night so well in the house, when some of us had a night off from work so we (Mark, Brett, Brooke and I), decided to play a game of cards, which was the game uchre. Over the game of cards we had drunk a bottle of sambucca, two bottles of Paddy’s Irish Whisky mixed with red lemonade and a carton of beer. As the night went on Brett and I who were partners were loosing more and more, as we later discovered Mark and Brooke were cheating, mainly because Brooke was looking at Brett’s cards. Somehow the conversation lead to dares, and they dared me to shave my head completely. Me being drunk and that, I went ahead with it. I could see Brett and Brooke planning something so I ended the shave a little early, not realizing Brett shaved two thirds of my head with a number one and the other third with the blade. To give Brett credit he wanted to complete it, and do the job right, but I didn’t know what they were up to. I later found out Brooke was trying to get the shavers of Brett to shave my eyebrows. It was a good and fun night, even so I ended up with no hair.
I was able to get another job with Eurostaff, at a bar in Donnybrook which I got sacked from after three days, wasn’t really told why I got sacked, Chris wasn’t really forthcoming. Thankfully Chris let me stay in the house and two days later I started work as a barman at the Davenport Hotel, the flagship of a chain that had seven hotels. The Davenport was great, my workmates were great. So, I finally settled in.
