LIVING OVERSEAS from my eyes.. WORKING FOR PEOPLE NOW

WORKING FOR PEOPLE NOW
As mentioned in the previous chapter, I applied for a job with People Now when Appleton catering agency went broke. Appleton’s went broke apparently, for growing too big too quickly, they couldn’t pay their staff, as they were sending us too events, and then they had to pay us the next week, but they didn’t actually receive the money themselves for the event for up to three months after, that what I was told anyway.
I had worked for People Now in two stints 2002 to 2003 and 2004 to 2005. During my first stint I would work at Excell exhibition center, Arsenal Football Club, The Oval, Chelsea arts club, but most of the time I was working at Chelsea Village, better known as Chelsea Football Club. At Chelsea I use to work the bar on match days and functions, a lot of the time they use to get me in before their own staff. The functions were great, I worked hard, had a free meal, cleaned up and then sat down and drank and drank and drank and then get a taxi home compliments of Mr Bates. Chelsea was good to work at, but too me they sought of used me, they only paid five pounds an hour, but used me many times as a superviser to delegate, cash up and to do the stocks. Suppose it was all valuable experience.
My second stint at People Now was my favourite, working for clients like Chelsea arts club, Excell, Earls court exhibition, Olympia exhibition, The Oval in corporate boxes, Ascot Racecourse also in a corporate box, Twickenham stadium, Totenham football club, Fulham Football Club, Mermaid convention centre and other minor clients.
My favourite jobs was working at Twickenham in the river suite as a manager, basically taking control of a room of 400 guests and 30 or so staff and making sure the customer live the Twickenham experience and to make sure everything goes perfectly well, also enjoyed working for Crown catering at Totenham and Fulham football clubs managing the corporate boxes.
My most enjoyable shifts were, working at Arsenal football club, one of many times, would be the time I worked in the corporate box, having it easy, and able to watch the full game between Arsenal and Liverpool which we were robbed. Also at The Oval working in a corporate box for a international cricket match between Australia and New Zealand, when the match had finished but the Aussies and Kiwis stayed in the ground, and were taking the piss by seeing who can make it to the middle with out being stopped by security, which kept the crowd entertained for at least an hour after the match, which no one had left and was a great laugh.
I must say I was lucky working at People Now, I knew Yvonne Silva when she was with Susan Hamilton Agency, because I was a valuable employee in my first stint, and when I did return to London the second time with out a visa, until I applied for my student visa, I was able to work for them, I still paid tax and that, but wasn’t really legally allowed to work. Just another benefit of working in the United Kingdom. If you get to know people, do your job right, ex bosses, and as well as other people, will look after you. Unfortunately now, Yvonne does no longer work for the agency, which makes it harder for me to go back for a few months too work, but do have something up my sleeve.
I am very thankful to the agency for my time with them because I have learnt a lot more about the industry. I have worked in I think every position possible from KP (kitchen porter), waiter, plate waiter, silver service, bar tender, host, cashier, preparation, wine waiter, supervisor, food & beverage manager, corporate boxes, and also checking in staff.
I have met and worked with some great team members. Yes, I would loved to have a better paid job or to be paid more, but I did something that I enjoyed, something I can fall back on if I cant get into media communications as like I did in Toronto. How many people around the world can say they’ve been to Twickenham, the home of rugby for example? How many people can say they’ve had a former prime minister, the honourable John Major give you the prime minister rub, serve a royal like Princess Anne and so, and that is just a very small minority of famous people that I have served.
If I have to give any advice for people traveling or backpacking and especially to London, just sign up with a catering agency there are so many in and out off London, you can work as less or many hours as you want, of course the work has to be available. You need no experience, but at the end you will have experience, which you can fall back on at a later stage. Working in the hospitality industry, makes a great second job. Trust me you wont regret it.
